Required Reading Course Text: Teaching for Understanding: Read Chapters 1-5 Required readings will be graded, using theGuidelines for Strategic Reading Strategic reading strategies are used in schools for insuring that students complete reading assignments in the content areas in ways that optimize student comprehension. Instructors require that students highlight important points, note questions and note personal reactions on the text. Students are sometimes asked to graphically organize concepts in a passage. Teachers assess strategic reading in several ways. I typically use the following two. The first is by asking comprehension questions that test student understanding. The second is by circulating around the room and checking student highlights and notes on the reading and asking individual students questions about their highlights and notes. For more information on this topic, you may wish to read Strategic Reading by Wilhelm, Baker and Dube.

Choose a topic/ unit that you want to work on.
